Not 100% sure after this latest update, but in the past, I've definitely hired a coach late in the season (say week 16 or 17) that had a 3Y contract beside his name. So it let you use him to finish out the playoffs, then got 2 more full seasons. I just don't know when the tipping point is in the season as to when it switches to 3Y vs 2Y contract.
