Operate the engine at idle with the shifter in the "Forward" gear position. Note the engine speed shown on the shop tachometer; the engine should idle between 725 rpm and 775 rpm. The ideal idle is somewhere near the midpoint of this range, about 750 rpm. Loosen the lock nut on the idle speed adjustment screw with a small adjustable wrench.

The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage. We have compiled some of his Carburetor adjustment posts here. Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns. Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running.
