You can dual wield finesse light weapons and dual wield hand crossbows which make them very good at melee and range while having very good AC. The problem is you kinda want 3 levels of rogue / thief to get a extra bonus action for your offhand.Dual wielding melee weapons is not great. So it does much less damage. With the Dual Wield Feat, you can dual wield any weapon, as long as they are not tagged as heavy.
