If you're good at not taking damage, only start doing heart upgrades after 1 full stamina wheel upgrade. If you're great at not taking damage, get 3 wheels of stamina first. At any time you have enough upgrades to get 13 hearts, convert any extra stamina into hearts for 13 hearts and go get the you-know-what and then convert back.
